Welcome to Walela Farm!

Our little farm began as a dream in 2001.  Brian and I had been married only two years and our blended family included my twin daughters and a house full of critters. Cats, dogs, birds all were a part of the family and we were rapidly outgrowing our little suburban half acre lot. So, with determination and the inheritance left from my mother, we set out to find the perfect small farm. The moment I walked in to the house it felt like home. There were things to change, a green tin roof to add and voila!

 Walela was born!

Walela is Cherokee for hummingbird. Our first year in the house we were amazed at the hundreds of hummingbirds that came to feed from our little glass feeders. As I struggled to find the right thing to name our little house I began to look up what the hummingbird meant. Thanks to the wonderful book “Animal Speak” by Ted Andrews, I came to find that hummingbird was the bird of joy. Joy….could their be any better way to describe a life long dream of living in the country, having my horses right at my door and all my animals with room to be happy? After hearing that Walela meant hummingbird, I had found the name for our place.

We hope that you enjoy looking around the site.  Check back often as we add information pages; pictures of our family, both four legged and two legged; and announcements of upcoming litters.
